Look for extended warranty or something. BE VERY CAREFUL AROUND CHILDREN. It was a 5 star. but now I don't know.We bought this in Sept 07 and it was working fine until recently my son moved it when it was plugged in or something.we weren't looking and now the thing won't work.
BELIEVE IT OR NOT, I STILL HAVE 2/3 OF FREE SPACE LEFT. ASIN: B000HI9O5W I BOUGHT THIS GREAT LITTLE EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE FROM AMAZON 14 MONTHS AGO AND IT'S RUN ERROR FREE EVER SINCE. THIS IS JUST AS SAFE AND A HECK OF A LOT MORE FUN. I'D RECOMMEND THIS IOMEGA PRODUCT TO ANYONE WHO'S CONTEMPLATING CREATING A BACKUP DISC. I HAD TO MOVE INTO AN APARTMENT AND HAD TO SELL MY LARGE COLLECTION OF 3200 LPs SO THIS ITEM EASED THE PAIN QUITE A BIT. SO FAR, I'VE BEEN ABLE TO FIND AND STORE OVER A MONTH AND A HALF OF MY FAVORITE MUSIC PLUS A VOLUMINOUS PORTFOLIO OF PHOTOS AND HUNDREDS OF IMPORTANT FILES.
AT FIRST: For a good 6 months, this thing was working just fine. The only problem was: it only needed to be reformatted. I had been using it daily, so this was unusual. There were no problems with the connection, so they went on to try and recover the data.
This is not money I readily have. They asked if it had any data on it previously.Yes, as a matter of fact, I did. I was told that this data wipe was virtually impossible, so perhaps I received a faulty device. And even if I still had the warranty, I would be able to send it back to Iomega for a new one, but they DON'T do data recovery. So here I am, without my data, searching for a new hard drive. The guy suggested I take it to a lab to recover the data, but that would be costing as little as $1,000 dollars. I was quite pleased with it.THEN: For absolutely no reason, my computer one day couldn't recognize it.
A good 300 Gigs of media and work.So they ran several data recovery programs, all of which failed. I"m really upset about all of this, so I'm writing this as a warning to all of you: don't go through what I did. I brought it in to a local computer repair shop, to see if the connection was faulty. They took the back of it off, unfortunately, so the warranty was void. They called me the next day and told me that it was working just fine.
Simply plug the USB cable into your computer, and voila, 500gb of storage at your fingertips. My only concern is that it sometimes gets a tad warm to the touch, but this has in no way affected its performance. I use this primarily for video, photo, and iTunes backups (scheduled weekly with Nero Back It UP), and have had zero problems with the unit. It does exactly what it is supposed to do.
It feels cheap, but has worked well for what I am using it for. I got this to back up my photos. It works well for that.
